So my seasonal position at the call center is coming to a close and I've been pretty stressed about working, and money, and bills, and all the wonderful things that go with being a responsible adult. I have an interview tomorrow morning with another call center and if I can land this position, things will be much more stable. Fingers crossed.

I have an appointment with Fullam tonight to work on my sleeve. I am so excited to see what the finished product will look like. I love his tattoo work. Check it out below, it's phenomenal. Fullam is so detailed and I am super thankful that he is doing this for me.

We are still planning on moving to Seattle, however since Jason will be on tour until the middle of May, we might have to wait until August to move. We will see. There is still time. At least that is the mantra I have been repeating in my head over and over again.

Akron/Family-"Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free"

Listening to and Akron/Family album is like living inside a schizophrenic's head. The voices may be different, but they all come from the same entity. Although this album is tamer and more pop-sensible than previous offerings, it's none the less an excercise in abstract songwriting and avant garde Americana."River" is my favorite track on this album. The repeated chorus of "You and I and a flame makes three" sticks in my head like gum to a shoe. It's repeated spins in my car while driving have only served to strengthen the impression it has made on me.

Take white boy blues groove, stir in a range of hip-hop artists ranging from socially conscious to southern fried, and pepper in some soulful hooks. What you have is an album of "cuts". This is a combination effort from the Black Keys and such artists as Mos Def, Rza, Jim Jones, Nicole Wray, and Ludacris. It feels like a Bed-Stuy block party spilled over in to Williamsburg and everyone got along.

Justin Vernon's voice coupled with his music feels like a hug at a funeral. It's all-encompassing and pulls you in where it's warm. That being said, for me, this E.P. is like an extension of "For Emma, Forever Ago". It's somber lyrical content and emotional swells make for a beautifully chagrin album. I have been enamored with the title strack "Blood Bank". It is heartbreakingly good. It leaves me nearly speachless that a song referencing eating candybars has nearly brought me to tears on several occaisions. Just stellar.

David Bazan-"Curse Your Branches"

Aside from my borderline disinterest in the "Headphones" album, David Bazan,(or any of his pseudonyms) has never made an album that I didn't like. "Curse Your Branches" is no exception. Bazan hits heavily on his old standby of religion, or in this case lack-thereof, and does so with unabashed honesty. His personal revelations in "Curse Your Branches" has been suggested to be the musical counterpart to Christopher Hitchens "God Is Not Great". I have heard these songs live and on live recordings. While I would say a tiny bit of sincerity is lost in the production of an album, it is none-the-less, his most honest album to date.

Cleverly titled folk-punk tracks are a sure way in to my heart. Phoenix natives, Andrew Jackson Jihad are a band I heard about due solely to constant e-mentions from Mike Dutkewych. He is not wrong in his praise for them. This album is perfect for those with short attention spans. At under half an hour for the entirety of 13 songs, it's not going to have enough time to bore you.

Great Lake Swimmers-Lost Channels

Lost Channels is the soundtrack to perfect, blissful slumber on a new Tempurpedic mattress. In the same vein as Bon Iver, Great Lake Swimmers offer simple, yet thought-provoking tunes that ebb and flow like a shores of the Lakes of their namesake. They cover a Carter Family song, which is alone worth a few spins. A filler-free quest for something more from an amazing Toronto band.

Honorable mentions: J. Tillman "Year in the Kingdom", St. Vincent "Actor".

Biggest dissapointment: The Avett Brothers "I and Love and You" (Unspeakably let down. Rick Rubin may be the one to blame for this, but seriously Avetts. Do better next time.)

My tentative super-belated spring cleaning yardsale is proving to be a task I may not be able to accomplish by next weekend.

Deconstructed Summer Style

So I mentioned a few days ago that I was interested in setting up an Etsy store for these deconstructed/shredded t-shirts I have been making. I got together with my good friend Jess and she modeled a few of the shirts I have finished. To check their durability, I washed a couple of the shirts on a gentle cycle and dried them in our dryer on a regular setting. They maintained their shape perfectly! I am so excited to get this started. Let me know what you all think or if you have any suggestions!

Chit-Chat and New Stuff

So I scrapped the play by play and just settled upon actually spending my vacation the way it's supposed to be spent, having a phenomenal time.

I'll update photos taken on vacation a bit later, but I do want to mention that I'm setting up an Etsy store to sell these deconstructed/shredded shirts I've been making. They are custom made and I can do all sorts of different patterns with the shredding. If you want buy one or know anyone who does, just email or call me and We'll work something out. I have about 5 under my belt so far and they are super comfy fabrics. Here is a photo of one of them I've made. It's super basic, but it illustrates what I mean. Thursday through Monday of the upcoming week{s} I will be road trippin with Evangeline and Jess to Florida so the next 5.5 days are going to be packed with work, bike races, barbecues, and more work. I'll be trying my hand at making a road-dog diary of the trip. Every local lunatic, radio sing-along, and largest ball of twine along the way will be documented (and hopefully spiced up with enough effusive language to make it worth reading).

They are Mokume Gane rings and I love them. Custom made by Jordanesque these rings will change color slightly over time according to our environment and individual body chemistry, but the pattern will remain the same. I have been cleaning all morning. Every last one of my nails are chipped to bits, which to some may be a sign of poor nail nutrition, but to me it's a sign that I'm getting something done. I'm achey. I'm worn out. I have an ocean's worth of troubles swimming around in my head. I'm actually glad it's been raining. It fits my mood to a T. Who wants summer weather and chipper birds when you just wanna keep your head down and keep movin? I feel like I've made a small dent in this house, but I know every corner and crevice I more closely inspect will no doubt reveal a need for more attention and elbow grease. Spring cleaning at it's best, right?

We have a work meeting in an hour. That should just be heaps of fun. Why is it that no one calls together a meeting to discuss what could be improved upon AND what's been going well? I have long been over this Nega vibe so many people here are all about. I'm not used to that. I don't wanna be used to that.

I am working on hatching a fledgling idea for a DJ night that no one is doing around here right now. It's still in early stages so I don't wanna talk it up just yet, but if all goes well I'm hoping to get some fun started. Keepin it Posi in '09. Get hip to it.

Generally I remain pretty mum about my fashion/style obsessions, but I need to get a few things off my chest so I don't, (no joke) have a bizzaro dream about them. This is the point where most of the dudes I know will amble in to the other room and make a hot pocket or something... so feel free to do so if this is boring to you. I understand.

First off, I just stumbled across a blog mentioning that Alexander McQueen was doing a line for Target. Fucking stellar right!? Wrong... I would link to the blog, but it's a moot point really. I'm pretty sure Mr McQueen spent all of thirty minutes sketching out these outfits with a liquid eyeliner pen while he was taking a mid-day crap. The aforementioned crap coincidentally, must have been the inspiration for this line. Consisting of boring basics, mismatched color pallets, and oddly placed studs, it bears resemblance to what would happen to a closet full of workout clothing if you let 9 year olds bedazzle everything.

My point is, for such a well known and well respected avant garde fashion designer, you would have thought he might put a modicum of effort in to relating hiS product to people who might buy it en-mass. Perhaps someone jokingly suggested Mr. Mcqueen not work too hard, and he took it to heart. Either way, I give it a big thumbs down.

Next...I know I'm way, way behind the times on nearly everything in fashion. About this I could generally care less about cause you know all that shit cycles back around again within a decade or so (hello grunge!?).

Except for this. Apparently about a year ago, Sam Edelman created a line of Balanciaga-inspired shoes for Victoria Secret.

They are almost exact knock-offs of the original and they are fucking fantastic in my opinion. Jason told me they look like goth tranny shoes and he's probably right, but I told him to take a hike and go get a hot pocket or something so let's carry on. Unfortunately they are gone from VS and while they occasionally pop up Ebay, they sell for several hundred dollars. Considering the originals retailed for around $179, that's a hefty mark-up. Supply and demand I guess. Anywho...I'll be lusting after these forever I s'pose. Unless I stumble across another pair, that are reasonable, and my size.

Friday post work:

Get some Pho at Little Saigon*
Drive down to Cincinnati for the 8th annual (reliving of my teenage years) Cincy Punk Fest (night 1)
Stay at the Deer Run house (since no one will be there)

Saturday:
Wake up and get some post punk coffee
Go to the Cincinnati Museum Center to see the Dinosaurs Alive! Exhibit and the Omnimax**
Drive up to Pump for Jason's appointment with Heather to get his hair did
Grab dinner at Cumin, this amazing Indian fusion place I've heard a lot about (paneer ravioli? OMG!)

Then back down to SGH for the second night of Cincy Punk Fest.
Followed by some rest before we make the trek up to Gem City for Pam's birthday/Easter lunch.

Needless to say, I think this is going to be super fun. I like a full weekend just as much, if not more than sleeping till 1 and then watching the Goonies on the weekend.

A Busy Last Few Weeks

So I have been meaning to make an update for some time now, but I've been inundated with things to do the were a bit higher on my priority chain. Since I am at work now and essentially have loads of on-the-clock free time, I suppose theres no time like the present to re-cap on the past.

Lets see...

Jason's car was totalled. That's a big one. We were coming back from Karaoke at the Northside Tavern. Dave and Anna were with us and I had elected to drive, since I hadn't drank anything all night. A white pedder van hit us on the rear passenger side where Anna was dozing off. I was in the center lane, driving 65, (I don't mess around with speed limits at 3 am) and once the van slammed in to our little Toyota Corolla, it just kept on going. I have a picture of the car. We're very fortunate that no one was hurt at all. We're also fortunate because Jason had full coverage insurance and it covered his can since the van dipped. Fuck a bunch of whoever that asshole was.
Jason's amazing parents are giving him their Honda Civic which is awesome, and it is seemingly working out for the best. OH! Here is a photo of the (car)nage.

Apart from that I have been searching for a new job, since the call center I work at now is seasonal and the Deli is only a day or two a week. I had an interview yesterday with another call center and I think it went very well. I don't love working at call centers, but it usually pays well and I'm pretty good at it. I sort of want to go back to school so I can find a way to do something I enjoy doing AND get paid well for it....or at least sort of well.

I'm looking in to getting a decent bike and learning once and for all,. how to handle a fixed gear. I'm used to bikes without brakes, but there is something about the way fixed gears ride, that I still need to get the hang of.

So it's also time to get the fuck in shape. It's probably going to be warm soon (emphasis on "probably" since our weather these days is pretty apocalyptic and changes super drastically from day to day). I'd like to start running, but I'm only going to do that if other people are with me. I'm not about to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time with all these people getting mugged around the Oregon District. Eff that! I'm also going to start trying to make bi-weekly pilgrimages to stores with healthier fare. If I'm going to continue riding this domestic train of cooking a lot, it might as well be reasonably nutritious. So I'll set my goals for shaping up and trying to have the overabundance of energy I used to have. Wish me luck.

This weekend is Cincy Punk Fest. Oh how I am letting the nostalgia wash over me. This is going to be fun. Saturday Supercade, Spodie, Pincushion, Seedy Seeds, Arms Exploding, Turnbull AC's, Mint 6 Ten. It's going to seriously be like a big old Void show, minus 300 couches and the possibility of having to use Doug Fingers bathroom witht the shellac'd tv because the downstairs bathroom looked like Hurricane Katrina hit it and Beale was no doubt watching through a hole in the ceiling from the sound booth. Oh the memories.

I kinda miss being younger and going to shows for shows' sake. Thats how we found out about good local and up-and-coming national bands. That's also how I met some of the raddest people I know. I'm very thankful for whatever the cincy scene was when I was 16 on up, even if it was really like a dying star in those days. It still helped bring a lot of people together and I applaud Cincy Punk Fest for carrying that tradition, despite a generation of kids who go to shows to be seen...or scene.

Ugh...

Lets end on a positive note shall we? We're having a Lost Nite at our house tonight, so if you're an avid fan of the show, or just love hangin out with sweet people who break copious amounts of bottles, come over. I still have to watch the most recent episode, but I'm about to knock that out now. I'm pretty happy right now. Things are feelin Spring-y.

Ketchup? Catch Up? Catsup?

Jason and I saw The Watchmen on Monday. It was spectacular. At nearly 3 hours, it could have sheered down a few of the artsy, sybolic scenes...but I understand what they were going for none the less. It stays pretty true to the graphic novel and it's visually stunning.

I found out that they are re-making Never Ending Story, a re-make (or sequel) to Labyrinth, Nightmare on Elm Street (with Billy Bob Thornton as Freddie), and an in talks to create another addition to the Ghostbusters series. If 1959 claims to have the day the music died, then 2009 must surely lay claim to the death rattle of the film industry. Haven't we learned anything from the previous remakes (and subsequent flops) of iconic films? Whats next? A re-make of Karate Kid with Wilmer Valderrama? Ah Jeez...

Tuesday night Jason, Dave and I went to Cincy and hung out with Heather, Chad, and Beale. Three awesome friends who I don't see anywhere near enough. This was post drinking a cluster eff of adult beverages that really had no business being consumed together. Mid-day hangover?....Kinda

I'm going to be doing all or part of the beer & wine tasting at the deli saturday, depending on when I get finished with my tattoo appointment. Everyone should come up, or down, or whatever and get your pre-St Patty's day imbibing on. Speaking of which...I need to go stock up on Jameson. It's going to be a long day.

This weather is giving me some much needed hope.

Last night Evan wanted a gin & tonic. He was super amped about it. So we got some, but I stuck with my peche lambic. Tater came over and we had a House viewing of the first Planet Earth dvd while listening to Neurosis. It was ridic. I can't wait to synch one up with Spiritualized's "Ladies & gentlemen we are floating in space". The album blows me away as is, but to listen to it playing over the images of artic tundras and vast mountain ranges is what I think it's really meant for.

Tonight is Jeremy's birthday party and I'm going, even though I've never met the guy. I hear good things. 10 million Elvis fans can't be wrong, am I right?

Saturday Lee and Greg are coming to town. It's always good to see those guys. I'm gonna make snacks till I'm blue in the face. We are having a St Patty's day party. Irish breakfast at the Dublin Pub, nice weather, green everywhere. I can't wait. I love St. Patricks day, or as Jason calls it "Amateur Day". It's good to just be a hellion once in a blue moon. It's been a long, long time. I'm hoping things will be on the up and up. I was not in good sorts yesterday and, while I'm still on edge a little, I have faith things will get better soon.

The weather is finally listening to my not-so-subtle urges to hurry the fuck up and get warm. The time for late nights on porch-couch with new and old friends is just around the corner.

Wedding sitch is now resolved. My cousin called me and told me she was able to change her date to the following week. Big sigh of relief.

Went down to Cincinnati yesterday with Jason. Ate at Myra's. Best Thai Pumpkin soup in the universe. I highly recommend it to vegans/vegetarians/soup lovers/etc...

On a more serious note:
Went to my mom's, then went to my dad's. Found out some extremely disturbing news that I still can't shake off. Tear'd up a bit on the way home. I can't wait until 4 to talk to Kellie about this. I'm worried to say the least. I like to stay posi as best I can, but I feel like I'm going to endure my fair share of sleepless nights for a while. PMA...PMA...PMA.....

So I have just recently found out my cousin has chosen to get married on the same day I am.

(cue shocked face)

The fuck of it is that we picked that date last summer to avoid such an incident. I thought we'd choose a date, tell everyone early, and then continue on planning from there. I love my cousin, I do. She is a sweet woman and I am totally happy for her, however I don't know what to do. Apparently she isn't able to change the date because family members of the groom have already purchased plane tickets and since she works in a hospital, the weeks for vacation time book up fast.

At this point I'm torn. Torn on whether or not to invite that side of the family. I mean, invitations are expensive. So is planning food, tables, alchohol, etc. etc. etc. for about 40 more people. Or do I just change the date alltogether? I mean, I can't do it a week earlier, or a week later. Or two weeks later. All of those conflict with other people's weddings. Sheesh. What a nightmare.

I'm chilled to the bone right now. I don't know what possesses offices to keep the A/C pumpin in February. I'm going to go get some Earl Grey and try to shake it off.

Jason and I recently went down to Cincy to have dinner at this Mexican place called Nada. Their food is incredible. I'd show you photos of it, but taking pictures was the last thing on my mind when it came out. I do have some photos of the decor though. It's cozy. They play QOTSA songs on their playlists. Their food is the jam. They have Prickly Pear Margaritas. Need I say more?

Today is going to be even better than yesterday. I get off at 4, get to close at the deli with Jason. I had Panera's Mediteranean veggie sammy and it's the jam. I get paid tomorrow. I moved over all our music onto the external HD to free up space for pro-tools. Stoked doesn't even start to describe it.

Oh and Jason is learning to play his banjo bit by bit which is adorable.

I am working all weekend. Between these two jobs I have not had a day off in like 3 or 4 weeks. I'm just bitching. It could be worse...

My ebay addiction is slowly but surely steamrolling through my current disposeable income. I did get some rad stuff though. Who wants to come over and watch the Planet Earth series? I'll make snacks.

I have a few photos from the white party for Diane's birthday, but I haven't had a chance to put them online yet. I wanted to get a shot of Brett's impromptu, earring-clad Goat, but my camera died pretty early on. That reminds me. I need to charge my camera.

We have the house to ourselves this weekend, since Brett and Evan are in Chicago (lucky bastards!). I wanna go to Kumas!!!

I paid up my ebay puchases yesterday and now I await with baited breath, our new external harddrive.

This baby is gonna house the files for pro-tools and make recording Power Nap stuff a breeze. Get ready for all the ideas I've been kicking around in my head to come to fruition. It's about to be a musically productive pre-spring. I cannot wait!

In other news, work,(or works I should say)have been occupying my time for the last few months. Work, sleep, repeat. Tough times with good paychecks. I been feeling a little down and out about it, but it seems to be easing up. I'm thinkin it's high time for a little vacation. Perhaps Chicago? Philly? God, I could do with some of this;

I can't fully recollect the details of last nite. What I do remember, somewhat is sparks, shitty dudes, tequila, razor burn, J Shuff, trading hits with BNiesz, and using the bathroom in the parking lot of a random apartment complex in Walnut Hills in full view no less, of passersby. I've come to realize that having not drank in quite some time, I have lost most of my tolerance. I'm really excited about this show tomorrow and seeing the Guys from Sadaharu again. They're good people. I would really love to talk to David Bazan again so I can geek out about how stoked I am he and Sam Beam did a show together. This is one step closer to my idea that they should collaborate on an album together(and Ben Gibbard).

I keep saying words like geek and creepy and following them with "city usa". As in wow, Janis Dickinson is "crazy city usa". I have no idea where it came from, but it stuck. I'm watching some Matt Damon movie in German on what appears to be the arrayan nation channel on our Ohio cable. Weird.

I think I'm gonna stop talking about traveling places to people. I'm starting to get on my own nerves, so I'm sure everyone is over it. I'm also going to keep trying to grow my hair retardedly long.
